Author Advice – West Hollywood Bookfair 2010
Filed Under : Author Interviews by nutschell
Oct.5,2010I went to the West Hollywood Bookfair last September 26, 2010. I met some wonderful authors, who were kind enough to give aspiring authors such as myself some advice:
FRANK BEDDOR
Author of the THE LOOKING GLASS WARS TRILOGY: The Looking Glass Wars, Seeing Redd and Arch Enemy, as well as the Hatter M Graphic Novels.
PJ HAARSMA
Author of the SOFTWIRE SERIES: Virus on Orbis 1, Betrayal on Orbis 2, Wormhole Pirates on Orbis 3, Awakening on Orbis 4
FRANCESCA LIA BLOCK
Author of 29 Books including the WEETZIE BAT SERIES, Girl Goddess # 9, and her latest book The Frenzy
AMBER BENSON
Co-author of the GHOSTS OF ALBION SERIES, and Author of the CALLIOPE-REAPER JONES NOVELS: Death’s Daughter and Cat’s Claw, as well Among the Ghosts.
CAROLYN COHAGAN
Author of THE LOST CHILDREN.
TRACY TRIVAS
Author of THE WISH STEALERS.
MICHAEL REISMAN
Author of the SIMON BLOOM SERIES: Simon Bloom: The Gravity Keeper, Simon Bloom: The Octopus Effect.
I wish I had more money with me that day. I would’ve bought many copies of all the authors’ books and gave them away to family and friends. Ah well, maybe I’ll start saving now for next year’s bookfair.
All the authors I met that day were warm, fuzzy (especially Michael Reisman, who had on a furry bathrobe in the 100 degree heat) and readily gave advice. Their eagerness to talk to their fans, and their willingness to share their writing secrets just confirmed my belief that the writing community is a close-knit and supportive one, and that all authors are helpful to other writers because they know the difficulties one must overcome in order to get published.

Francesca Lia Block is a one of a kind and stupendous writer and imaginative being..She has contributed greatly to young writers and not so young writers and the art of story making.
Nanda,
I agree. She has written so many wonderfully imaginative books. I have yet to read her newest one though.
Nutshell, you are a powerhouse! WOW! I’m totally impressed. Great videos, great energy, great stuff. (I especially loved Michael’s and Francesca’s advice, and it was cool to see the themes coming through across all the authors you interviewed – like write what you’re passionate about, and write what you want to read!)
Thanks for all you do,
namaste,
Lee
Lee,
Thanks! I just love asking any author I meet what advice they can give to writers such as myself. Everyone is so nice about giving their tips because they know how hard it is to even finish writing the first draft. I do so love the writing community!
warm regards,
Nutschell
P.S. Don’t worry about the name. I get that all the time, because I’m always summarizing events “in a nutshell”
whoops – sorry I spelled your name incorrectly. Duly noted moving forward: Nutschell
Namaste,
Lee

She’s amazing. I’m so happy I got to meet her and the other authors here. You should read all their books—they’re all so awesome!
[...] After signing my book, she agreed to do a video interview for my blog. I gave her my business card and she contacted me a few days after to give me compliments on my write up of the West Hollywood Bookfair. [...]
