Right Brain vs. Left Brain in Writing

While researching for our recent meetup,  I stumbled upon an article on right brain vs. left brain.

Experimentation has shown that the two different sides, or hemispheres, of the brain are responsible for different manners of thinking.

right vs left Right Brain vs. Left Brain in Writing

What does this information have to do with us writers? Well, a lot it seems. Our creative muses reside in our right brain, and we use this hemisphere most often for writing. Our internal editors, (or Infernal Critic, as I like to call it) reside in our left brain, and we use this hemisphere for editing. Simply put, we use our right brain for writing and our left brain for editing.

Since writing a book requires both hemispheres of the brain, I was curious to see which side of the brain I used more often.

I took a random quiz I found online

And I was quite happy with the result of my test:

Right Brain/ Left Brain Quiz
The higher of these two numbers below indicates which side of your brain has dominance in your life. Realising your right brain/left brain tendancy will help you interact with and to understand others.

Right Brain/ Left Brain Quiz

Apparently I use both sides of my brain equally. This is good news–but I always thought that as a writer, I would have more of a right-brain dominance.  I’m wondering how others would fare in this quiz.  Would writers show a right/left brain dominance or equal dominance?

Would you care to test your brain dominance in the service of science? Let’s do a little experiment, my friends.  Take the same quiz I took here, and post your results as comments on this blog.

I got 11 right brain and 10 left brain.

This makes perfect sense to me. I’m in a science based field, but have always been very creative, artsy, and free spirited.

  4. Jen says:

    interesting results

left = 10 and right = 11. I always see myself as sort of in the middle in a lot of areas.Maybe it relates to being a teacher who teaches everything. I’m also left handed, but use my right hand for sports and music.

  5. Maya H. says:

I was Right 11, Left 10 and I am a writer (but like to edit more than i like to write)

  6. Peter says:

Left: 9, Right: 10, systems administrator, but also dealing with nature conservation, seems like the test is correct, compared to results of the other test (http://www.wherecreativitygoestoschool.com/vancouver/left_right/rb_test.htm). It was 53% right, 47% left. It drives me crazy to determine my brain side dominance.

    I’m also left handed.

  7. dany_miller says:

either youre too smart or your results are fake.
we also know how to edit codes you know.
either way, this doesnt accurately measure.
but it was fun answering the survey.
fun to try tests people make that could somehow give us a rough estimate of what we have.

  14. Sara says:

    Left Brain Dominance: (6)
    Right Brain Dominance: (11

  19. innawake says:

i got 8 left brain dominance and 11 right brain dominance.

  20. Floramie says:

I got 9 left brain and 11 on right brain dominance. I love logic and numbers but i am more inclined on drawings and really appreciate music. And of course, I am left handed. : )

  21. Monique says:

I thought my right would dominate, but it’s left 8 and right 7. How come you have this high number of 16, or I should ask what does the number by itself mean?

  22. Rikki says:

I got 11 right 12 left or i forgot it, the important thing to note is my left is higher by 1 point than my right. I am a leftie wannabe writer, I thought my right is more dominant because of that reason. Guess I was wrong. Now I know why I cant really finish all of the novels I am trying to create, and they were many.. DAMN!!

  23. Adam Nguyen says:

    Awesome.
    I’m right brain :D

  24. Sanjiv kumar (India) says:

I Scored left Logical-10 and Right Creative-14. I am also writing 4 books on memory development methods. I always believe of my subconscious intuitions and i am very imaginative person .

  25. jason says:

    (6) left and (15) right
but i write, throw, kick, punch with my right
