Every Wednesday, I feature a writer/blogger and his/her workspace.  My aim is to get to know fellow bloggers/writers better through their workspace and writing habits. I also wanted my bloggy friends to share some of their writing wisdom here.

Today, I am most eager to welcome Bish Denham, author of that fun blog Random Thoughts.

Welcome, Bish!

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you do for a living? What genre do you love to write? What are some of your hobbies or interests? Do you have a hidden talent?

I’ve included a picture of me at age six. I look so confident!

Thanks for letting me come visit you Nutschell!

Before I retired I worked for 23 years at a home for abused and neglected children. I loved working with the kids and consider myself blessed to have known them. Their strength and resilience was incredibly inspirational. What genre do you love to write? Because I had such a magical childhood growing up in the Virgin Islands, I like to write for those tweeners, hopefully to pass on the magic. What are some of your hobbies or interests? Besides reading? I tat, which is a form of lace making, made with a shuttle on my hands. It’s all made out of tiny half-hitches and square knots. Do you have a hidden talent? I don’t know if it’s hidden, but I sing and play the guitar a little bit.

On Workspace

1.  Where do you do most of your writing?

Even though I have a desk, I do most of my writing on a couch, using a little fold out table for the laptop.

2.  Where did you get your desk?  How did you go about arranging your work area?

The big one, that I don’t use much, I got at furniture store… new!

Bish’s desk

3.  What are some important things on your desk?  Are there specific things you need to have around you as you work?

I really don’t NEED anything around me to write except my notes. That said I have several small objects that are special to me. A tiny olive wood bowl and stone from Assisi, a figurine of St. Joan of Arc, a small beaded sea turtle, and a little sleeping dragon…

Bish’s favorite things

4.  What do you love most about your workspace? Do you have any favorite objects on your desk, or things you use often?

I don’t really love it, it’s functional. I’d have to have a ton of money to make a space I’d really love. The thing I use most is my ancient thesaurus.

5. What’s your writing beverage?  What do you love to drink while you’re writing?

I don’t usually have anything to drink while I’m writing, too much of a possibility for spills. But when I do, it’s a simple glass of water.

On Writing

1. Who is your favorite author?  Who inspired you to write?

Favorite author? Oh gosh… there are so many, Steinbeck, London, Dr. Seuss, A. A. Milne, L. Frank Baum, Tolkien… It was my mother who inspired and encouraged me to write.

2. What’s your typical day as a writer like?  Do you have any writing related rituals or quirks?

I’m pretty haphazard. My main ritual, if it is one, is to meditate for five or so minutes before diving in.

3.  Do you write everyday?  How many hours a day do you spend writing?  What are some of your worst writing distractions?

I’ve always been terrible about writing every day. I write in spurts. When I do write, I’m fairly consumed by it and will write six to eight hours at a time. I gave up feeling guilty a long time ago about the times I’m not writing.

4. Why do you write?

I write because I’ve been writing most of my life. It seems to be an aspect of my being I can’t get away from.

5. Any writing tips or techniques or words of wisdom you want to share with us?  How about a favorite writing quote?

I really don’t have any words of wisdom except to say, if you feel like writing, then write. It doesn’t matter if it good or bad if you get published or not. Write for yourself first, the rest will follow.

As for a favorite quote I have two. “You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.” Jack London

And: “Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen.” John Steinbeck.

Thanks, Bish, for giving us a glimpse into your writing life.

I avoid drinks for the same reason, too many spills. Doesn’t matter how careful I tell myself to be…

    Great interview, cheers for sharing.

Hey Bish! Your work desk looks pretty similar to my own…and like you say…its functional. Great to get to know you a little better! :)

  3. Shelley Sly says:

Hi Nutschell! Just stopping by real quick to say that you won a critique or blog promo at my blog. Congrats!

Stop by whenever you can, but no rush. :)

  4. I try to keep my desk cleared so it is better than functional, but that doesn’t always happen.
Going after inspiration with a club now!

    • Bish Denham says:

Oh Alex, I can clear of my desk one day and it’ll be piled up with paper the next. There is a strange kind of order to the mess, but I still haven’t figured it out. And it’s MY desk!

  5. Nick Wilford says:

Both workspaces look very nice, but I’m afraid I can’t write on the couch. I’d just fall asleep all the time! My kitchen table does an OK imitation of a desk.

  6. Cecilia says:

Hey Bis, it’s great to meet you. :) I write on the couch from time to time as well, It’s comfy :) Great interview Nutschell and Bish!

  7. Ciara Knight says:

You do look confident. :) I tend to write in a chair with my laptop in my lap and rarely sit at my desk. Keep writing! Enjoy!

    • Bish Denham says:

I wish I had that same confidence now. Being naive seem to make it easier to be confident. I need to return to being a child, which I’m sure, now that I’m aging won’t be too long. :)

  8. Love your writing desk… very much like mine:)

  9. Lynda Young says:

I love that you work on the couch, Bish. I do too. And that photo of you is awesome!

  10. Lynn Kelley says:

What a cutie six-year-old Bish! I think it’s wonderful that you worked with abused and neglected children. I’m sure you touched and influenced many of their lives. I think tatting sounds really cool, like something I’d like to learn. And to be able to sing and play guitar, very talented indeed. I enjoyed learning more about you in this interview, Bish. And I love those things on your desk that have special meaning to you!

  11. Jess Haight says:

What a fun guest post! I enjoyed learning more about Bish and how she writes. I love the picture of her as a 6 year old. Also- I think it is great that she writes wear she is most comfortable- that is what it is all about. Awesome quote from Jack London!

  12. Thanks for sharing. I love the quotes and the desk totems. It’s nice to have something fun around us when we write.

  13. Love that quote by London. Gotta agree that it I wait for inspiration, it takes a while to show up. It’s always interesting to see how other writers do their thing. I could use a filing cabinet like Bish’s. I have more paper than I know what to do with. :)
