Writing Updates:

I thought I’d be finished with the second draft of my middle grade novel by the end of this month. Of course that’s not happening. At the rate I’m going, I’ll need at least one more month to finish the darn thing.

What’s taking me so long is that sometimes I have to rewrite an entire chapter instead of simply tweaking it a bit. I write anywhere from 1500 – 2600 words a day, but it’s still not enough for me to achieve my goal of finishing my draft this month.

I know I have extra hours in the day when I can be working on my novel. But instead of writing, I find myself catching up on my favorite TV shows or just doing some none-writing related chores. I just don’t have the mental energy or the physical will to keep on writing after a long day of work.

But maybe it’s not a matter of stamina, but of time management. Between work and family and the various other activities that require my attention, I might be spreading myself too thin. Maybe this lack of energy is just my body’s way of telling me to stop and take a break before I work myself to exhaustion. Or maybe I just need a vacation.

On a lighter note, I seem to have reverted back to being a kid. I love all things cute so I’ve been collecting these little guys since they first came out:

minons

I love these minions. I actually wish I had real live ones to help me with my very long to do list. (See what I did there?)

Anywaaaay…How do you make time for your writing? Do you have any special time management tips or tricks? Do you collect minions too?

I’m horrible at time management, and my rewrites always take me so much longer than I originally think they will.

But sometimes we just need downtime.

And I don’t collect minions, but I love yours.

  2. I think it’s great you’re still productive with all you’re doing. I’m finding I’m tired at the end of the day too and am wanting to read a bit more or catch up on TV shows I like but have 8 or more to watch in the series these days too. I think it comes from trying to be productive all the time. I’m starting to recognize it’s okay to take a break sometimes. Don’t feel guilty about yours.

  3. Finding time to do anything that we love is important, I think.
    I love your collection.

  4. Minions!
When I’m writing, other things in my life just have to go. I realized early on I can’t do it all.

  5. Happy Monday! I love the minions too even though I’ve never seen the movie. “Oooh banana!

I’m still working on the organization thing myself, but I think I’m getting better.

I can relate to the frustration of not meeting writing goals. I’ve been working on this round of final edits for far too long. Like you mentioned, something always seems to come up between work and social life. I’m still trying to figure out the balance. I’m thinking I may just make everyone aware not to contact me or plan on getting together in August. And as far as energy after work, I may stock up on some energy drinks :) Good luck moving forward. I know you’ll get it figured out =)

You’d think three weeks without television or internet, I would have finished my novel draft. No such luck. No, I don’t have a minion. :(

Hey, maybe that’s my problem. I need a minion!

Wow, you write alot of words/day!
Keep it up. Don’t rush. It will get finished when it gets finished. It’s all in God’s perfect timing.

I think if you force yourself too hard you start getting less and less out of it. I like to think once I’m working on a story the cogs are still turning even when I’m not at the computer (I hope so anyway).

I am working on a “schedule” for writing, although with a 6-year-old now at home for the summer it has been difficult to do! Trying to work out a schedule so that I can do a good chunk of writing in the morning, and another in the evening when he is in bed :)
Minions …. I MAKE them!! I crochet little stuffed Minions, and also have made a Minion hat or two. I love them to death. Aahh!

  12. I try so hard to keep to a time calendar for my writing, editing and everything else, but it never stays that way. Things always go astray…hehe

I was just lamenting this morning in my journal that my summer has imploded leaving me little time to even think about writing. It’s frustrating and frightening and has left me feeling like a failure, and yet there’s not much I can do about the circumstances this summer has wrought. Sounds like you are digging in and doing the hard work of revision and rewrite– and the end result will be better for your slower and dedicated work. All the best!

  14. I am terrible with time management so I can totally relate. I feel like I am making excuses for myself, but sometimes it really is hard to concentrate after a long day at work and all I want to do is watch tv.

It sounds like you are still making amazing progress though in spite of feeling tired. I’m impressed! And I totally love those minions. We have a collection of them here at work and they are our mascots for the summer. 😀

  15. Melissa Bradley says:

Congrats on the awesome progress you’ve made so far. I’ll keep sending good thoughts your way so that you reach your goal. Love those minions. :)

  16. I sometimes fall a month behind in my goals, but it’s needed. You’ll get things done.

    Cute toys.

  17. Second drafts are often harder for me than first drafts! Good luck with it. It’s always hard to schedule things in the summer for me!

  18. Nas says:

I wish I had some minions! Trying to juggle the various hats I wear is very tiring job….

  19. Jay Noel says:

I’m the same way…I have so many responsibilities, there’s so many times where I just don’t want to do much if I have the time. You need to just chill out to keep your sanity.

  20. LD Masterson says:

I need minions. I need better time management. I need time managing minions.

  21. Good luck with your draft. I am a very slow writer because I’ll happily spend all day working on one sentence, as I did recently… But it was a good sentence.

  22. LuAnn Braley says:

I haven’t been collecting minions, but I think I may have to start. That is, if my daughter will donate the one she got at McD’s last week. :p
